The trend for rubber band bracelets is a lot like the ones from your childhood. We had them too, but they were a bit different. Ours were simply round, rubber bracelets that we stacked. Though the colors did not mean much at first, they took on different meanings down the road, some of which were not very nice. You can still buy this type in the stores if you want to relive a little of your past. Just remember to keep an eye on your teenagers who are wearing them, because the color code is still out there, and not all of it is PG-13.
The bracelets today are thinner than the rubber band bracelets that you may have worn when you were younger. Not only that, they come in some pretty incredible shapes. You may have thought that the letter O was easy with a bracelet, as that is the shape they are normally, but you can also find any other letter of the alphabet that place around your arm. You can also find them in just about any shape that you can imagine from a high heeled shoe to a bunny rabbit. They do not look the same once they are on the arm, but the different shapes and themes are what makes these highly trade-able and collectible.
These rubber band bracelets go on a little funny, but that is part of the charm. They look nothing like the original shape once you get them on your arm. Instead, they look much like twisted up rubber bands, and many of them can be a bit tight as they are made for smaller wrists. If you are an adult that wants to wear them, be aware that some are not going to fit you. Children tend to pile them up on the arm and they can have some hair loss on the arm, which is not a big deal, but can get painful if they were too many. If they are having problems, ask them to wear less at once.
As with any fad that seems harmless, there are problems that have come up with these rubber band bracelets. They are not serious problems, but your children may react very badly if they are very into this trend. Many children have been so distracted by trading and sharing these in school that some schools have banned them and they are taken away when children are caught with them. If you find out they are not allowed at school, remind your child that the teacher can take them away and there is nothing you can do about it. However, luckily for you both, they are cheap enough to replace if that happens.
